The Right Business
by Ibrahim Seliman, Arabic Host
In Jesus' parable The Great Supper [Luke 14:15-24], a certain man gives instructions to look for the homeless and the "nobodies" of society in order to attend a banquet. He had already been rejected by people who didn't think much of him and instead thought too highly of themselves. So he decides to replace them by a different set of guests who are very poor, lame and socially unfortunate. The host instructs his servant not to let their shyness get in the way since they might feel inadequate for such a banquet. The man inviting them will be sure, in a Middle Eastern fashion, to press gently on their hands and "compel" them to come in. As we share the Good News of Christmas, that the Word has become flesh through divine love, we are introducing them to Jesus. It is that Love that prompted James Rowe of 1912 to sing exuberantly, "Love lifted me! Love lifted me! When nothing else could help, Love lifted me!" Islam, with all its strictness on morality, can never save them. I have seen how some wives badly want their Muslim husbands to convert to Christ, and that I wish very much for them. But Love, as we are compelled by it, gently leads and never pushes. The Holy Spirit gently leads whereas all pushing is of the flesh. Yes, this Christmas we all feel the urgency of the Gospel to compel Muslims to experience how much loved they are by Christ through us. For love is not some ghost, but it has taken the form of a person who took our humanity upon himself. We should be willing to do likewise towards our fellow-neighbor. Our actions, our labor of love, towards Muslims should speak louder than our sermons. Then the Holy Spirit gently moves. Here, the Lord would say, now is an accepted time for you Muslims, no need to waste time. Today is the day of salvation. Here I am positive that Love will prevail for "Love never fails" [1 Corinthians 13:8]. We are in the right business, the business of the Lord, on behalf of souls that need His salvation. We are expected to be always present in His Vineyard and like a faithful midwife, we joyfully receive the birth of a Muslim into eternal life. Yes, He alone is mighty and if He can raise Lazarus from the dead, He can persuade Muslims’ hearts towards the Son of God. But at the same time, we have a job to do: move away the stone. At times we get rushed and rush others in our work of missions, but the Lord is in no hurry. He alone decides when the right time is for the birth of a Muslim into the Christian salvation. We need to make ourselves available for that very time. We never know when we might say something that would be the very thing the Lord uses to move the heart of that Muslim to believe in Christ the Lord. It may be our words that are spoken to them, but it is the Leading of the Holy Spirit that counts. We should diligently wait on Him and seek His face this Christmas. May the Lord through His grace enable us to do so. Merry Christmas to you.
